Truth be told, modern art confuses me. I love visiting the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and MoMA in New York City, but I’m definitely the person walking through the galleries with a quizzical look on her face.
Then I discovered the MoMA podcast, A Piece of Work, hosted by Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson. MoMA promises that Abbi and her guests will share “everything you wanted to know about modern and contemporary art but were afraid to ask”. They seem to understand that for many of us a “bicycle wheel attached to a stool; a giant canvas splattered with paint; dozens of soup cans…prompt a ton of questions.” Uh, correct.

The format works brilliantly — throughout the 10-episode podcast, Abbi leads us in lively conversations with curators, artists, and some really clever friends, including Hannibal Buress, Tavi Gevinson, RuPaul, and Questlove.
And Abbi? She’s hysterically funny, self deprecating and humble. She made me feel welcome inside MoMA’s galleries even though I was just listening to her podcast interviews. With her, modern art was approachable…not to be feared but enjoyed and respected.
