I discovered Flaural, a local Denver band, a little over a year ago when a long day of food prep for an impending Thanksgiving day prompted me to find a show I could catch to help me unwind (and take my Dad to). With no pre-conceived notion of what might be happening behind the doors of Larimer Lounge that night, I walked into a sold out venue and walked out with a new favorite band.

Flaural had opened my eyes to a whole scene of local talent that up until that point, hadn’t existed to me. A year later on November 24th, I was eagerly awaiting their set, when a transformer blew causing a power outage at Larimer Lounge, ultimately cancelling their show. Although bands and fans alike walked away in disappointment, Nick Berlin, Noah Pfaff, Connor Birch, and Colin Johnson, who make up the ever-positive Flaural quickly announced a reschedule date of January 25th.

Walking up to Larimer Lounge on the 25th to a line out the door, it became immediately evident that the rescheduled show was a blessing in disguise. Pre-sales had nearly tripled and the show quickly sold out after doors, leaving staff turning people away. Supporting bands, Eye and the Arrow and Panther Martin, were the perfect addition to the local lineup, helping showcase to concert goers that Denver is abundant in musical talent. Flaural took the stage to a ruckus of friends and family cheering and a completely packed house.

With the first few notes, the band emitted a calm and trance-like energy into the room that pulled the audience into the performance. Cast in an ethereal blue fog, Johnson’s dreamy vocals, partnered with Birch’s eerie synth crafted a new sense of time and space that any listener could feel lost in. The addition of Berlin’s steady beats and Pfaff’s wavering guitar effects created something exceptionally beautiful.

Any voyeur of their performance would agree that the bands command of both the stage and their instruments led to a cohesive and stellar performance that you didn’t want to unhook from. In a world of constant distractions, Flaural and their music provide the rare gift of making the audience feel present.

After a ten song set, and two song encore of both new and old material, Flaural walked off stage, leaving behind an audience excited to see what the band who embodies the Denver music scene will do next.
