Scheduled for May 23rd and May 27th at the famed Metropolitan Opera House in New York City, the renowned American Ballet Theatre was, for the first time in its 81-year history, presenting MacMillan’s beloved full-length classic, Romeo and Juliet, with two African-American dancers performing the title roles — ABT’s Principal Dancer, Misty Copeland, and Soloist, Calvin Royal III.
“Romeo is a career-defining role, and it’s such a gift to do it alongside Misty,” says ABT soloist and ascendant star Calvin Royal III. “It is momentous, not just for us, but for the future of this art form, and for the future generations of kids who see themselves in us.”
“When two talented dancers can come together, it’s ideal and exciting. But when those two dancers are Black, it’s explosive.” said Copeland.

Their chemistry is obvious; their artistry breathtaking.
Alas, due to the cancellation of cultural events worldwide, the May performances have been postponed. But, thanks to Misty, Calvin, the ABT and New York’s 92nd Street Y, we get to hear them discuss this historical marker, overcoming barriers, and their careers with journalist, Budd Mishkin.
